The dynamic duo of Tess Barker and Deena Adar are the fearless hosts of LoftSEVEN’s monthly Rooftop Comedy, and have a ton of funny between them. Somewhere between doing sketch comedy with the world renowned Groundlings or starring in Current TV’s “Rotten Tomatoes Show”, they bring lineup of standup comedy’s newest and brightest to shine under the Los Angeles skyline. And the icing on the cake they bake is a featured musical comedy act. Their collective genius is strong, and it looks like the ladies are just getting started. Here are some of their thoughts on Rooftop Comedy and The Life Comedic in downtown L.A.
L7: Do you guys feel like the comedy scene downtown is thriving? If not, do you see the potential for it?
Tess: There is definitely a downtown comedy scene. There’s a pretty strong art and fashion scene, which is kind of a breeding ground for creative stuff to happen. Downtown has a strong indie comedy scene and a lot of that has to do with the fact that there are cool spaces for art shows like lofts and galleries, which makes it stand out. There’s like a family of spaces reapproapriated for comedy. Also I feel like the comedy is edgier there.
Deena: Yeh, because the bigger venues in Hollywood and other parts of town have already been established, so there’s an opportunity opening for different places to thrive. Downtown is blowing up with fashion and art, so why not standup?
L7: What are some of your favorite places to do standup?
Deena: I actually took a hiatus from standup. I’ve been doing a lot of sketch with the Groundlings and standup at The Improv. The Bungalow Club was my favorite place but the show fizzled out.
Tess: The [LoftSEVEN] rooftop is honestly my favorite. I like intimate settings that are kind of off the beaten path. Like, one time my friend hosted a show out of his garage and that was one of my favorite shows.
L7: Do you have any favorite moments hosting Rooftop Comedy?
Deena: Well, one thing unique to Rooftop is that we book a musical act, and that’s always big fun. This month we’re featuring The Fresh, and those guys are hilarious.
Tess: Musical comedy is hard one of the hardest things to do, and I’m always in awe of people who can pull it off. And the thing about The Fresh is that their music is good, it’s not just about the comedy. Theyre’ unique in that their music is good too. I love intelligent witty humor. The first time I heard them, I couldn’t stop laughing the whole time.
Deena: Another thing about Rooftop is that we always try to have a comic lineup that’s ecclectic with the content and angles. We try to get comedians from different walks of life and backgrounds so people can get a wider variety.
This month’s rooftop comedy goes down on Tuesday, October 27th. Get the full lineup here.
