The hilarious Ron Babcock
In anticipation of the Rooftop Standup Comedy Night on October 27th, we thought it would be great to talk to one of the comics who graced last month’s event. We were lucky enough to tie down the one and only Ron Babcock, who took the time to chat with us about the comedy scene downtown, the magic of free booze, ramen and devil sticks.
L7: Where are some of your favorite spots to do comedy downtown?
RB: RZO Hothouse puts on a great great show called “Hothouse Comedy” as part of the Downtown Art Walk every month. Everytime I see their lineup, I tend to curse in disbelief. For example, “Holy shit, really?” You have to RSVP to a special guest list to get in because it gets so packed (e-mail RZOmgmt@gmail.com to get on that list). Oh and they have free booze. Rule of thumb: Free Booze = “Hey this show is great!”
L7: Do you see the potential for the downtown comedy scene to blow up?
RB: Definitely. There’s been shows in downtown before, but nothing like the ones at LoftSEVEN and RZO Hothouse. Those shows have a great buzz. I love downtown because I think the architecture is amazing and there’s places that remind me of old Hollywood that you just don’t much of in well, Hollywood.
L7: We know you stay pretty busy yourself, so can you give us a peek into some of the new projects you’re working on?
RB: I wrote a one-person show called “Hey World, You Just Got Babcock’d.” I started writing a one-person show because “Hey, it doesn’t have to that funny.” But I’m really proud of the finished product. It’s about my transformation from a beta male to a super awesome alpha male, kinda. Molly Prather, who is the queen of one-person shows, is directing. You like sex? You like stories about almost sex? Well you’ll probably like this. Next time it goes up is Wednesday, December 9 at the Imrov Comedy Lab at 8:30PM. I also make silly videos with a guy whose won a bunch of emmy’s at – http://www.funnyordie.com/upcloseandpersonal
Oh and I blog everyday at http://www.RonBabcock.tumblr.com. Huzzah self promotion!
L7: What was the best part about your show at LoftSEVEN?
RB: Having the LA skyline as the show backdrop was amazing. Definitely one of the best venues I’ve ever performed at in LA. A lot of people like to get down on LA (they’re the unsuccessful ones), but that night was one of those nights where I looked around and went, “Fuck yeah LA!” Also, the lineup of comics was amazing. Oh and the free booze helped for reasons stated above.
L7: Speaking of amazing comic lineups, who are three comics we should be keeping an eye out for?
Kyle Kinane and Matt Braunger for sure. Both are in the process of blowing the fuck up and for good reason. Kinane features for Patton Oswalt on the road and I just read that Braunger’s going to be on Conan tonight. In my opinion, they are some of the best standup LA has to offer. Also, there’s this guy named Paul Cibis who kills me. He hasn’t been on TV yet, but he’s such a good writer that it’s only a matter of time.
L7: We hear you’re pretty good with devil sticks…does that conflict with being the world’s strongest AND fastest comic?
RB: I’m not going to lie, being amazing is tiring. Although I like to keep a low profile so I don’t make people jealous. That’s why I live in a studio apartment and eat a lot of ramen.
